Photo Essay: Albany Motocross

Top left: Practice was muddy, but that didn’t keep Bill Clark from battling it out with his friend Josh Smith (not pictured) for a day of riding.

Top middle: Cam Germyn holds his line as he shows good form around the corner holding off the bikes twice his bikes size.

Top right: “Bubba” and Taylor Pierce watch as the sun get's lower as they wait for their turn to practice.

Middle left: There’s only one thing better then working on your own bike, and that’s having your own technician. Chris Booth preps Adam Metzler’s air filter and other parts between every ride.

Bottom left: Albany is open every Wednesday (weather permitting) and for $25 you can ride from 3 till dark and spectators admission is free only on practice days. They also have racing events which are held on various weekends every month and race classes from pee wee to pro. Their site is www.AlbanyMX.com

Bottom middle: Your guaranteed to see a spill or two on very muddy track, but thankfully mud is also soft so Glen Prestholt picks his bike back up and continues on.

Bottom right: The sun can be intensely blinding, so Andy Hutley puts the sun to his back and charges down the next rough straight.

Photo's were taken March 8th and 11th of 2009 at Albany Motorsports Park.

Mud increases stopping power by 100%

Albany Motor Sports Park is once again open for the 2009 season. March 8th was the first day Albany Opened its gates for 2009, but was greeted by a steady day of sprinkle and random downpours. Glen Prestholt charges through the mud to the final whoop section, only to have his front wheel stopped by the first rut in the section.

critique

This photo by Jim Frazier I think is a lucky find more then it is a good photo. I like photos like this because of rather having a photo that is just eye candy, but this photo can also be a conversation piece and something people would ask questions about.

I chose the above linked photo for two reason, the first is I like the combo of blur and sharpness in this photo which gives the sense of speed and danger yet you can still clearly see whats going on and whats being used. Second I really like the bob sled like contraption the 2 boys are riding. The boy in the back looks bored to death even though he is being towed by large truck at speed without a helmet.

I like this photo, but it could have been cropped tighter to get rid of the distracting background. This by far the worst way to steer a bicycle or quadcycle not sure what to call it. The girl on the left looks frustrated and I would be to if I wanted to turn right but my sister turned left.

I Think this photo is very cool. It was made merging two photos to get the proper exposure. The colors are on the darker side making it more intense. The scarf flying away was timed well, but to me since the women is wearing a wedding dress why is she letting go and not holding on.

Action Sports Project

Austin Bender, 14, makes good use of the break from the rain to test his new bike setup in preparation for the upcoming outdoor season. One week prior, this track was impossible to walk on, but a week of wind and a day of sun left for ideal conditions.

I like the angle this was shot at, it looks like she is looking down the alley but you cant see what she sees. Her tattoos make her skin match the graffiti on the walls.

My neighborhood

Living at the top of Witham Hill there are not any stores that are close by, so that is why I do all my small item shopping at the Country Market & Deli. The store sits by itself on Walnut Rd. in front of the Welcome Home trailer park.

Erin Boyd manages the Oak Vale office during office hours at my apartment complex. She was spotted here chatting outside the office door with a fellow employee.
Robert West, 20, pushes Oak Vale Apartment's poor broken down John Deer back to it's parking spot. Looks like it is missing a few chunks of plastic off the fenders.

Critique: I like my photos except I do not really feel my portrait mainly because it is lightly blurry. I will most likely re-shoot it and try to find a better and more scenic area for the next portrait.

This photo I found in flickr I feel is amazing. The timing could not have been more perfect as it gets the surfer approaching a wave that a dolphin is riding within, but the dolphins is also huge compared to the surfer. If that were me I would probably not realize that's a dolphin but rather mistake it for a shark and flee for my life.

Adam Metzler, 21, gets his bike sideways for spectating friends at secret location on the outskirts of Gatson, Oregon.

Critique: The whole day shooting here I was getting very frustrated with the sun, for it washed out a bunch of really good shots. Here only the tops of the trees and sky is washed out, but I am still happy that the rider and hillside with people on it came out with good color, just a little pixelated.

It's All in the Hips.

Cody Hollen from Banks, Or. Shows how its done, sliding through a hard packed and very dusty corner on a private track in Hillsboro.
Austin Bender, 14, from Hillsboro, Or. Rips apart a corner after corner at home on his practice track.
Thank god for my little bother who gave me plenty to do and photograph over the summer while myself was healing up from ACL surgery, and I have to say if your going to shoot on a cloudless day in the summer you better have a polarizer they help a ton.

Gordon Kelsley, the outgoing and fun manager of Oak Vale Apartments in Corvallis, displays his weapon of choice for breaking up parties and noise complaints. Gordon takes great care of his tenants and does not use outsource for any help, everything is done in house. There is a closer relationship between the tenants and employees here than most other complexes around, plus they have some of the lowest rates in Corvallis. So if you're looking for an apartment call Oak Vale, or just drop by.

Photo Critique 2

The photo I found on flickr is of a Marine sharing a warm moment with an Iraqi child. This photo shows a different perspective of the war and whats going on overseas. Just shows the playfulness of a child can warm the heart of a hardened Marine at war. I also liked the color in this photo, the Marine blends in well with the brown environment while the child stands out against the background.

Feature: Back to the Basics

Graphic design major Mark Meadows, 21, from Hillsboro, sits back in the shadows of his art room at his apartment in Corvallis, Oregon, to asses his newest pastel piece. A 3d sphere is drawn with a combination of blues and in a basket style cross hatch pattern. Mark during the day attends classes at LBCC, and works for OSU as a graphic designer making ads and fliers for campus events. At night, Mark, enjoys stepping away from the computer art and likes to create things by hand, the old fashioned way late Thursday night, 1/15/09.

Photo Critique: Cool race shot from brazil off flickr

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pedrokirilos/233314819/in/photostream/
I really think this is a sweet shot, because it looks like its early in the race and the 3rd place rider looks a bit crossed up and trying to prevent landing on the rider in front of him. I also like the color the picture was shot/edited , its a calm color with an intense scene going on and probably wasnt the hardest to capture since the action is coming towards the photographer so the photographer did not have to pan as much if at all.
